Water Softeners Indianapolis

We install, repair, and service water softeners and whole-house water treatment for homes across Indianapolis and the surrounding counties. Local tap water averages 19 grains per gallon, which is "very hard" on the USGS scale. We measure what is actually coming out of your tap, then size the fix to that number instead of a catalog default.

Why it matters

What 19 grains does to a house

Hard water does not announce itself. By the time it is visible on the glassware it has been working on the plumbing for years.

  • Scale where you cannot see it

Hardness precipitates out inside the water heater, the supply lines and the valves long before it shows up on a faucet.

  • Fixtures and appliances work harder

Scale on a heating element or a valve seat means the appliance runs longer to do the same job, and wears while it does it.

  • More soap for the same result

Calcium binds with soap instead of lifting dirt, which is why detergent stops lathering and laundry comes out stiff.

  • Spotting, film and dull glass

The white spots on glassware and the film on a shower door are the minerals left behind after the water evaporates.

The local number

Indianapolis water is very hard

19gpg
Citizens Energy Group's 2025 system average for Indianapolis and Morgan County: 317 ppm, or 19 grains per gallon.

Hardness is not one number across the city. Citizens runs ten treatment plants, and what reaches your tap ranges from 8.7 to 27 gpg depending on which one serves your address. Anything above 10.5 gpg is classed very hard.

One exception worth knowing: Carmel Utilities softens its water at the plant to roughly 8 grains, so Carmel homes start lower than the rest of the metro. Still hard enough that a home softener is what gets you to zero.
