What Hardness Setting for an Indianapolis Water Softener?
Program your softener to your measured hardness, not the city average. In Indianapolis that measured number falls somewhere between 8.7 and 27 grains per gallon, against a Citizens system average of 19, and setting it wrong is the most common reason a working softener stops keeping up.
Setting the hardness number
What number should I enter?
Your measured hardness in grains per gallon. If you have not measured, the Citizens 2025 average for Indianapolis and Morgan County is 19 gpg, but the system ranges from 8.7 to 27 depending on which plant serves you. The utility will give you an address-specific figure at (317) 924-3311. Use the average only as a placeholder until you have your own reading.
My utility reports ppm, not grains. How do I convert?
Divide by 17.118. One grain per gallon equals 17.118 mg/L, so the Citizens average of 317 ppm works out to roughly 19 gpg. Entering 317 into a softener expecting grains would be a dramatic over-setting.
Should I add anything for iron?
Many softeners ask you to compensate for dissolved iron by adding to the hardness number, following the manufacturer’s formula. Check your manual. The adjustment varies by unit. If you have significant iron, a softener alone is likely the wrong tool.
What happens if the setting is too high?
The unit regenerates more often than it needs to, consuming extra salt and water. It is wasteful rather than harmful, and it is why some households go through salt far faster than expected.
What happens if the setting is too low?
The resin exhausts before the next regeneration and hard water starts coming through at the end of each cycle. This is the classic "my softener stopped working" complaint when the unit is mechanically fine.
Does the setting need changing over time?
Only if your water changes or your household size does. Indianapolis blends surface and groundwater and the mix shifts, so if symptoms return after a period of working fine, re-measuring is a sensible first step before assuming a part has failed.
If the setting is right and the salt is fine, the next suspects are a bridged brine tank or a control valve not cycling. That is a service call, not a settings change.
